While doing some cleaning this weekend, we unearthed a old Sony Laptop (8-10 years old).  Any thoughts on what I could do with it?

I usually point folks at World Computer Exchange (http://www.worldcomputerexchange.org/donate-computers), who I've done some volunteer work for in Hull, but I doubt your old Sony Laptop is a Pentium 4. They have to draw the line somewhere. A lot of school are in the same boat: poorly planned obsolescence in the computer industry means it's probably best recycled in the broken up and melted down sense.

Does it boot? If not, it's not worth mucking with.

Assuming it does: what processor, how much RAM?

If it's in generally good shape, you could turn it into a music connector for your stereo (to stream or play from storage), load up Linux and OpenOffice and turn it over to your daughter as her first computer, or you could outfit it with WiFi (I have a PCMCIA WiFi card, if you need one) and make it the web browser that sits by your sofa.

I remember this story about Edson de Castro, one of the co-founders of Data General. He was unhappy with how a hard disk was shaping up, and brought the engineers out for a cruise on his yacht. Somewhere in the cruise, he had one of the hard disks, on a chain, thrown overboard, and remarked to them: "Huh. Doesn't even make a good boat anchor."

My guess is you just recycle the thing.

Presuming operational, repurpose it into an electronic picture frame? There are a few hints out on the web as to how to dismantle the components and reassemble them into a usable form for this.
